The Engineer: What Keeps Me Motivated

Hello again! Last week we talked about Imposter Syndrome. I hope you felt inspired and encouraged through reading our posts from last week especially if you're feeling out of place in your current space. This week, we're talking about what keeps us motivated. Sometimes I may feel doubtful about my abilities, however, it's my willingness to push forward that keeps me motivated.

Your motivation can be fueled intrinsically (from within you) or extrinsically (from friends, family, or experiences), While it's great and justifiable to be fueled by both (I am), I personally feel your intrinsic motivation will really drive you in your career. In life, you can get yourself caught up in making a group decision when in reality you are the one person who can carry it out. In your career, no one is going to care more about your career than you so you have to take ownership of that.

Intrinsically, I’m motivated by the quest to unlock different levels of my self. I’m constantly trying to learn and gain knowledge and insight to tackle different problems to be a better person than I was the day before. Each aspect of my life allows me to really hone in on what makes me who I am which makes me more confident in my abilities and aspirations as a whole. I am motivated by my ambition to be the best person I can be in my career and my relationships.

When my intrinsic motivation don’t appear to be enough, I lean on my extrinsic motivations to pull me out of whatever funk I may be in. Here are some of my extrinsic motivations:

My parents: they sacrificed so much to come to America in hopes of cultivating a life for themselves, me, and my siblings. They invested so much of their time, energy, and money to make sure that we could have the resources to achieve everything that I have ever wanted and our constantly encouraging me to achieve more than I ever thought possible.

My siblings: I’m the oldest of three and I take that role in their lives very seriously. As I navigate through different aspects of life, I aspire to leave them with a blueprint of how they too can achieve all that I have and more.

My friends: they are amazing, inspiring, and intelligent. They’re constantly challenging me and motivating me to be the best version of myself and keep me accountable for the things that I say that I want to accomplish.

Travel: I’ve gotten the opportunity to see so many different cities both within and outside of the United States and have gotten to come across different people from all over the world. Hearing there experiences has been inspiring and has fueled my quest of seeing more of the world and being able to afford to go to all these places is a huge motivating factor.

You guys: you all motivate me to continue sharing my story about how I’ve gotten to where I am today. Sometimes when writing, it can feel like no one is really listening. But knowing how important it is to share our stories keeps me and the rest of the team writing about our lives.

Find what motivates you and let it guide you towards achieving your goals. When times get hard or you’re feeling doubtful, remember why you began. - The Engineer
