The Engineer: My Natural Hair Routine

Updated: Jul 27, 2020

Hey Everyone! Hope you're doing well! Last week we talked about natural hair in the workplace so we thought it would be fun to talk about our Natural Hair routines. I would classify myself as a somewhat lazy natural; I mainly wear wash and gos and definitely don't spend the entire day doing my hair. If you're curious about how I do my hair during wash day, check out this post.

Washing

While I'm in the shower, I separate my hair into 4 fairly large sections, each section I go in with shampoo and then use a scalp massager to go get all the product build up from my scalp that I would never be able to get to no matter how much I try. It has literally been such a game changer. I follow up with conditioner and use the EZ Detangler Brush to detangle my hair. I saw several Instagram ads for this product which led me to making this purchase but TRUST me, it's worth it. Before this brush I would detangle my hair using a comb or a brush maybe once a month ( I would finger detangle the other days I washed my hair) because the process just took so long but with this brush, it cuts that time in half. After I lather that section with conditioner and I feel that my hair is fully detangled, I move onto another section and repeat the process. I wouldn't say I have a favorite shampoo and conditioner because I mostly just rotate between what's in my closet.

Deep Conditioning

I follow up shampoo and conditioning with a deep conditioner. Separating my hair into sections again I lather my hair with a deep conditioner and then follow up with an oil for added moisture. I personally use Mielle Rosemary Mint Strengthening Hair Masque with the Mielle Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Strengthening Oil. I let the deep conditioner sit in my hair for as long as I feel like (sometimes I get occupied with too many things so I usually leave the deep conditioner overnight.

Styling

This part of the Hair routine is where everything comes together. I start the process with soaking wet hair fresh out of the shower and then divide my hair into four sections. In each section I

  1. Add leave in conditioner ( Currently using Mielle Pomegranate & Honey Leave In Conditioner )

  2. Split section in half

  3. Add a smoothie to that section (Currently loving Mielle Organics Pomegranate & Honey Curl Smoothie )

  4. Add a Lighter Hold Styler ( All time favorite hair products is Camille Rose Naturals Curl Maker)

  5. Follow up with Gel ( LOVING Aunt Jackie's Don't Shrink Flaxseed Elongating Curling Gel )

  6. Go to the other half of the section

  7. Repeat Steps 3-5

  8. Move onto a new section

The whole process takes about 20-30 mins and then I let it air dry.

Maintenance

While I'm wearing my hair down, when I go to bed I section my hair in four puffs and put my hair over a bonnet. Once I feel like my curls don't look as good anymore but I'm not ready to wash my hair, I transition it to a puff and then I put my hair in a pineapple with a scarf.

Doing my hair has become so therapeutic for me and I have come up with some pretty amazing ideas during wash day. What are some of your curly hair products? Comment below!
