The Engineer: 2020 Focus

Happy New Year Everyone! I hope your time off or time spent with those that you live. We're back in full effect this year! And we're kicking it off with our New Year's Resolutions and Intentions for 2020 like we have done every year (If you're curious or new you can check out my intentions for 2018 and 2019) Every year I like to kick it off with a word that I want to use to define the year and this year the word is focus. When I look back on my goals that I set for myself, I realize that each year is truly building upon each other. Now I'm ready and eager to hone in and dive deeper into myself, my relationships, and my career unapologetically and fiercely. Read on to see how I'm focusing this year.

I'm focusing on my career. I feel like I've conquered imposter syndrome and can walk proudly in the fact that I've worked hard to be where I am today. With that in mind, I want to make sure I'm continuing to find opportunities to grow in my career by learning new things and empowering others around me. I'm no longer a junior-level engineer anymore and as I move on to being senior, I want it to be because of the depth of knowledge and expertise that I have built. My goals to help me get to that point are:

  • Get promoted to Senior Engineer

  • Become advanced in four new concepts/languages

  • Help someone who comes from a non-traditional or is a minority break into the software engineering industry

  • Speak at two conferences

I'm focusing on my community. I am so thankful to have such amazing people around me and in my corner. My efforts would be nothing if it weren't for the people supporting and encouraging me every step of the way and celebrating the small wins. As I've gotten older, my friends and family are all over the place and I want to continue to maintain those friendships while also bringing like-minded people together. My goals for this are:

  • Curate/Organize memorable experiences with my circles

  • Make a concerted effort to talk/visit all of those who are close to me

  • Volunteer at an organization that I'm really passionate about

  • Continue to be a mentor to others

  • Share more of what I do on my social media

I'm focusing on my finances. To be completely transparent, your girl has been playing games when it comes to saving. While I have been able to have some great and memorable experiences and also pay all my bills, it's time to get serious and buckle down to get one step closer to being financially free. My goals for this year are:

  • Increase the money in my savings by 4x what it currently is

  • Keep a stronger eye on the money going out of my accounts

  • Stick to my budget

  • Find another stream of income

I'm focusing on myself. A lot of time I feel like I'm running on auto-pilot and then when I land I'm like what have I been doing? While you don't want to get too far in your head and not get anything done it's important to have a balance. I personally feel that I can't help other people if I don't have a grasp on what I did to get to where I am today. I also want to feel confident in myself and also have a strong grasp in my sense of self. My goals for this are to:

  • Go on a solo trip

  • Journal at least 300 days out of the year

  • Work out at least 208 days out of the year

  • Run 2 half marathons

  • Eat healthier

  • Decorate my apartment

  • Do something for myself before heading out into the world (ex: make breakfast, workout, etc.)

I'll be checking back in with you all to let you know how my progress is going. In the mean time, let me know what your goals are for 2020! - The Engineer
