The Chemist: My Hair Routine

Hey everyone! I hope you all are surviving this heat because mannnn it has been something serious in Columbus. Like I mentioned in my last post, July for us this year is about natural hair! We already talked about the stigma of natural hair in the workplace and this week we're giving you all our hair care routines. One of my favorite things about being natural is that my hair is so versatile! I'm just a creature of habit so I really always start the week with a twist and curl. It's really been a staple style for me since my hair has gotten a lot longer. I'm also am going to post a video at the bottom of this post and on my personal instagram (@devyjanai) of me doing it. Just so you all know, I have Type 3C/4A super thick hair, that is high porosity so all of my products are thick and I use thicker oils to seal my hair. Okay let's get into my process!

Step 1: Detangle

I always always alwaysssss detangle my hair first! I don't use anything special but a spray bottle of water and my Denman brush, but you can always add some conditioner in your spray bottle. I section my hair and then wet it, brush it, and twist it up before hopping in the shower.

Step 2: Co-Wash

I'm the natural that only clarifies my hair once a month. Every other week, I co-wash it. My go-to co-wash is As I Am's GroWash. The pomegranate and passion fruit scent always has my hair smelling immaculate. My hair is thick, so using creamy products work well. This co-wash is a staple in my routine. Some alternatives though are Eden BodyWorks' Coconut Shea Cleansing CoWash or Pantene's Pantene Pro-V Deep Hydrating Co-Wash. As far as shampoo goes, I'm an Eden girl and I use Eden BodyWorks' Jojoba Monoi Moisturizing Shampoo. I must admit, I am not completely married to a specific conditioner (I change it a lot), but some that I like are SheaMoisture's Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner and Eden's Revitalizing Conditioner.

Step 3: Deep Condition

I deep condition basically every week. I switch between moisturizing and protein deep conditioners, but in the winter I stick to more moisturizing ones than the proteins. My hair absolutely LOVES TGIN's Honey Miracle Hair Mask. It is my absolute favorite deep conditioner. I swear by it. I also like Eden's Jojoba Monoi Deep Conditioner and ORS Hair Mayonnaise. I typically leave it in for a few hours, or overnight if I'm lazy, but always with a processing cap and a towel on top.

Step 4: Style

Once I wash out my deep conditioner, it's time to style. I use the LO(C)O method (leave-in, oil, cream, oil) for my hair and it works pretty well since I have high porosity hair. My staple leave-in is Eden's Coconut Shea Leave-In Conditioner, but I also like As I Am's Leave-In. As far as oils go, you want a nourishing oil first and then a thicker oil to seal. My go-to's are Almond Oil and Jamaican Black Castor Oil. I really haven't found anything to beat that combination.

I put the "C" in parentheses because this really depends on what I have. A lot of times the "cream" product I use with my styling gel AFTER the oils, but occasionally (in the winter) I use a hair milk in between oils. For that I'll use either Creme of Nature's Moisturizing Hair Milk or Pantene's Leave On Detangling Milk.

As far as styling products, my holy grail is Camille Rose's Camille Rose Naturals Almond Jai Twisting Butter. I cannot stress to you enough how much I love this twisting butter. If I don't have that then I use cult fave, SheaMoisture's Curl Enhancing Smoothie. I also add a little EcoStyler gel (any work, I use the Argan or Olive oil ones) to hold the twists and so my ends to stay on the perm rods.

For my twist and curl, I do a two-strand twist and then roll the ends in medium sized perm rods. It's easier to show you all so check out the video below!

What are some of your holy grail products? Tweet me some products to try!
