The Chemist: My Favorite Apps

Hey everyone! I hope you all are checking in with yourselves and trying to stay positive. Please be safe as your states start opening back up too! Just because we don’t HAVE to be in the house doesn’t mean the virus stopped spreading. Wash your hands, wear your masks, and wipe off your packages. This week we wanted to talk about some of our favorite phone apps and why we love them. Here we go!

I love that we live in an age where we can do a lot of things directly from our phones. It makes it easier to knock out projects on the go and the convenience of that is unmatched. Don’t get me wrong, there are some things that work better on a laptop or that I choose to do from there, but mobile apps really have changed the game. (Fun fact: I wrote this post from the Wix app on my phone)

Productivity

LinkedIn

I didn’t always get why people liked LinkedIn, but now I’m all in. It’s one of those apps you don’t really appreciate at first, but as you try to grow your career it starts making sense. This is a good app to use for networking. Every time I go to a conference, professional workshop, or networking event I find myself always asking people to connect with me on there. And since time is creeping towards graduation, I make sure to keep my profile updated. You can look for jobs and apply for them, share professional news, or just keep in contact with people in your professional network all in one place. It’s also good for me because it makes sure I’m on top of updating it as new things happen. It allows me to think about career moves and see what’s out there. If you’re reading this and realized your profile isn’t updated, take some time over the next few days to do it. It can really make a difference.

Google Drive

Cloud services are amazing! I love the idea of keeping everything in one place. I have multiple gmail accounts because of other organizations I’m in, but putting documents, pictures, forms, etc. on Google Drive is so effective. A lot of things already on my phone I can put directly on my Google Drive so the fact that lots of sites have cloud saving capabilities is amazing. You can also share and real time edit content there with other people, making team-driven work seamless.

Reminders

A tried and true Apple app! I use this app for everything. Grocery lists, general to do lists, you name it and it’s probably on one of the lists on this app. I appreciate the fact that you can schedule reminders and assign their importance. This app works well for my lifestyle because I think in list form. I’m always telling Siri to add something to a new list.

Oak

Because taking care of your mental health is another form of productivity, I have to mention the Oak app. It’s free and has breathing exercises, guided meditations, curated courses for more in depth meditative work, and even sounds and exercises for better sleep. It’s wonderful. I tend to use this app mainly for guided meditations and sleep sounds, my Apple Watch has me covered with the breathing exercises. You can set timers for how long you want to meditate and the app even sends me daily motivational quotes. I also enjoy all of the sounds I can listen to to help clear my head so I can drift off to sleep. I’m a sucker for rain/running water sounds, those calm me down immediately, so I set that timer for about an hour most nights. It’s really helped me get and stay asleep.

Creativity

Over

This HANDS DOWN is my favorite creative app. Majority of the graphics you see us posting I’ve made on Over. Even with the free subscription you have a fair amount of freedom on how your graphics look (where things are, fonts, colors, size). You can share content directly on social media or save it to your camera roll. It’s really user friendly and even has templates you can start with. Soyo actually told me about this app and I haven’t looked back since. The amount of graphics I can make just sitting on my couch on my phone is wildly amazing and so convenient.

Canva

Now for the video type content, I started using Canva. Traditionally, I use Canva on the computer but they also have a mobile app that you can use. It’s important to note that you can’t start a project on your phone and finish it on your computer....YET, but it still can get the job done. You have more freedom with Canva than you do with Over, which means you need more patience. This would work really well on a tablet with a stylus, but it’s not impossible on your phone. The video content I created came out really nicely so I’ll start spending more time on Canva to see how far I can stretch it.

Preview

For all of my content creators that need to schedule posts, Preview works really well! It’s what I personally use for our instagram content and it’s user friendly. You can upload content from your phone, Google Drive, take pictures/videos directly, and you can even schedule carousel Instagram posts. So far I haven’t run into any issues with the number of posts I can schedule at one time and being able to bulk save hashtags in groups makes my life easy when I’m writing captions. The one feature it has that I haven’t tried is “Repost”, which would allow me to repost Instagram content to our page, but once I do I’ll report back. Overall, this has been my favorite post scheduling app (and it’s free).
