The Technologist: Study Motivations and Tips

Hey guys! It's been a while... but I'm back to help you all gear up for exams and any other tests you may have coming up before the big holiday break! I understand how tough it can be to get back in the zone between multiple holiday breaks so I want to provide you with some of the best practices for preparing yourself. Whether you're studying for school-related exams, certifications, or some other kind of test, these 5 study tips will help you find that motivation again.

1. Build a study schedule

Creating a study schedule for the exams taking place around holidays, enables you to stay on track and prepare in advance. Utilize the schedule to check exam time frames and determine which exams you need to prepare for in advance versus later.

2. Create a study plan

Create a study plan to go along with your study schedule. Do this well in advance, if you don't want to spend your holidays studying 24/7. Creating a proper study plan is a very good habit as it will increase your overall productivity and help you study more effectively.

3. Find the purpose/establish goals

One of the best solutions for getting motivated to study is to find the purpose or goal behind why you're studying. What's the end game? What's your long-term goals? When you cannot find a purpose for all the hard work you're putting in, just remember why you are doing this and where you want to see yourself in another 5-10 years.

4. Eliminate distractions

Getting rid of distractions helps to improve focus. Avoid studying in rooms full of other people, especially people working on unrelated tasks. It's best to go to a room where you can study in a calm and quiet environment. Also, make sure to turn off your mobile devices unless being used for studying. Sometimes I will find myself able to focus when listening to music, depending on what I'm studying. Lastly, close all the doors and windows in your study room if there is too much noise coming from outside.

5. Take study breaks!

It's very easy to burn out when you're constantly working on something. One of the most effective things you can do to prevent burnout is take breaks. Go for social or even solo walks. Talk to people. Grab a snack/"brain food". Take a nap. Come up with different break activities to help you decompress and relax between moments of studying. Study breaks are said to even improve memory! This is something I do everyday at work.
