The Engineer: Work-Life Balance

Hello Everyone! Hope you all are having a great week! This week we are talking about work-life balance. This is something that a lot of people ask me about. It's really easy to get so consumed by work to where it feels like you don't have time for anyone else. I feel that often times people are looking for some magical formula to determine what work-life balance should be, but in reality it isn't. You have to determine what your work life balance is for you and you have to own it and live by it. For me, I like to stay busy because if my work is busy and my life is busy I feel like it creates a sense of balance. My tactic may not work for everyone (it can be very tiresome) but at the end of the day, it keeps me from being so consumed with what is going on at work. Here are some other things you can implement to maintain your sanity while at work:

Go on Vacation

Use your vacation days! While weekend trips are really run and short, there's something really nice about taking a whole week or even an extended period of time when you're supposed to be at work but you're not. You don't even have to go somewhere far, you can plan your own staycation. Utilize those days and make the most of that time to recharge and rejuvenate.

Find a Hobby

Join an intramural sports team, workout regularly, or volunteer! Find something to do that doesn't involve you just going straight home after work. I think this will definitely help you find some sense of enjoyment and fulfillment.

Find a creative outlet

Being in a job that's super technical, it's really nice to find something that you can do creatively and freely. It could be filming, drawing, photography, writing, designing. Anything that allows you to express yourself differently than when you are at work.

Make time to take care of yourself and your well being, Your work is only one part of your life so don't let it consume you. - The Engineer
