The Engineer: Why You Shouldn't Compare Yourself to Others (and what you should do instead).

Hello again! Hope you all are having a good week. This week we’re talking about comparing yourself to other people. Now, I know it’s really hard especially in this day in age when technology allows everyone is more accessible to each other; meaning it’s a lot easier to see what other people have been up to. It’s also even easier to fall into that trap and spiral into a whole bunch of negative thoughts and feelings of inadequacy. Well I’m here to tell you that you shouldn’t do that. And here’s why:

It’s counterproductive.

So you’ve stumbled on some new information via someone’s profile or a friend and you think “wow they’re doing so much better. I wish I had that life” and then you go into some negative thoughts. What are you going to do from there? Beating yourself up isn’t going to help you be better. If you want to be better, you have to make sure that you’re actually doing better and sulking about how other people appear to be doing better than you isn’t going to help you.

You don’t know the whole story.

People are only going to show you what they want to show you. Unless people are giving you every intricate detail about their lives (which most cases they aren’t) you’re not going to fully know how they got to where they are. Fixating on what people are telling you or showing you doesn’t paint the full picture and probably doesn’t showcase all the hard work that they put in.

Everyone’s path is different.

There are no two people on this earth who started exactly at the same time. Even twins are brought into this world at different times. What works for some people may not work for you due to several circumstances that may or may not be in your control. You can only control certain aspects of your life so it’s in your best interest to just focus on what is in your control to limit stress.

Now that I’ve told you to stop comparing. Here’s what you should do instead:

Be more self aware.

What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? Can you truly say that you’re doing everything that you can? Take the time to evaluate yourself and create a plan of action that can make you shine.

Build your brand.

I talked about how to build your personal brand a couple posts ago and focusing on that does wonders! Focus on your goals and your aspirations and work on building those up!

Find joy in the season you’re in.

This is probably easier said than done but it’s something that is very critical. Every piece of your life may not be together but that doesn’t change the fact that some pieces are. Trust that you’ll be okay and what is meant for you will be for you.

I hope that this blog posts helps! It’s so easy to compare yourself to others but when you own who you are and what your goals are and you’ll come out on top!
