Hello everyone! Hope you're having a good week. This week we're talking about how to pick the right college. It's been awhile since we've had a blog post in relation to college so I hope you or someone you know can resonate or benefit from this!
Making a choice about where you want to go to college is a big decision. The reason why I say this is because where you go to college can directly determine where you're going to live in the next phase, what your career prospects are as well as what opportunities are available to you. Making that decision at 17 or 18 years old can be extremely difficult, especially if you're a first generation college student and you are trying to figure it out. For me personally, my parents didn't complete their undergrad education here in the United States, so they really didn't know the ins outs of the process. As a result, I looked to figure out everything by myself and tried to make it less stressful for everyone involved. While everything worked out really well, here are some things that I think EVERYONE should consider when looking at different colleges.
The academic programs
One of my biggest advice for future college students is to have an idea of what you want to do. People always want to tell you that you have time to figure it out but you really don't at least not at the expense of you spending a lot more time and money. If you know you want to study STEM pick a school that provides a great STEM program that offers research opportunities or avenues to grow your career through internships or exploratory opportunities.
Location
If you know you want to stay close to home, then pick a school that’s close to home. Don’t feel pressured to move farther away just because it seems cool. Additionally, if you want to go to school in a major city pick a school that is in a city. Location doesn’t have to be everything when picking a school, but it can be a good tiebreaker.
Organizations
It’s tough to say what organizations you’ll want to be involved in while in college. However if you have a general idea, check to see if they’re there! Do you want to be in band? Play sports? Join a sorority? Are there professional organizations to join? Keeping those in mind can also be a great deciding factor in determining what college would be best for you.
