In my last post I gave some advice on how to navigate conferences. Now if you’re successful at a conference, you’ll gain a ton of knowledge, resources, and hopefully an internship. Internships are important because they’ll help you land a job after college. They also help you discover what you would like to be doing and what you don’t like to be doing. I interned every summer in college which I believe to help me land a job right after college, and by interning, I had an idea of what I would be doing as a software engineering in the corporate world. You want to make the best impression and get the most out of your internship. Here are some of the things that I’ve learned through my internship process: Ask Questions.
I know you’ve probably heard this a lot, but it really is the best thing you can do. No one expects you to have all the answers and they want you to learn while they’re on the job. It’s okay to be the “stupidest” person in the room because you’re there to learn and grow. Network.
If you’re interning at a really big company, it’s impossible for you to know about everything that’s going on in the company. Meet as many people as you can. Not just the most senior people, even your peers. People come and go from company to company which will only expand your network more. Show your personality.
If there’s one thing that I’ve learned and seen while working, is people want people who they can see fitting into their team. You have to show that you’re interesting and personable because those things matter just as much as you doing a good job on your project. This matters especially when you’re applying for jobs full time because managers want to see that you are someone that they can invest in. Do your job and do it well.
This should go without saying but it’s important that you complete your assignment to the best of your ability. You may not be able to complete it, but don’t let that reason be because you dropped the ball. Understand your project and how it connects with your team because that will not only impress your manager but his peers and others on your team. Your internships can be one of the best experiences of your life. Do your work, learn a lot, network, and grow yourself as a professional and as a person. – The Engineer
