The Engineer: Discipline

"Discipline is doing what needs to be done even when you don't want to do it."

Last week we talked about accountability which really ties into today's topic: discipline. For me, discipline is one of the things that motivates me to get things done at work and outside of work. I've always been someone who intrinsically motivated to make sure whatever I needed to get done especially from a young age. However, as I've grown up, I see that discipline is not something that is going to come up naturally to you; you have to keep working and developing it.

From a career perspective, I've always been a go-getter and strived to make sure I was doing what I needed to do in the work setting. However, working in corporate America isn't just about your project work; it's also about what you contribute to the community. I'm involved in various networks across my entire company which require additional efforts outside of my job. Being able to balance all my day-job work as well as my extra curricular requires a lot of time management and discipline. You want to make sure you're not dropping the ball on anything which can often happen if you're not organizing your life. My manager suggested that I keep an excel spreadsheet of all my current tasks and track my progress on all of them. Once I started doing that everything became a lot clearer and I feel that I can put my best foot forward at work. Requires a lot of effort to be organized, but you'll be a lot less stressed and can preform your job a lot more efficiently.

As a new adult, managing your money requires a lot of discipline. Pay day is more of a reminder of what bills I need to pay rather than what I can splurge on, and I finally understand why my parents used to say "put that back" at the grocery store and "we have rice and stew at home" if we were out somewhere. I have definitely had to tell myself both those things countless amounts of times and although it is sort of heart-breaking, I know it will pay off in the end. Because I save money by bringing my lunch and sticking to my budget, I can use that money for other things that I really like doing such as traveling (which I'll talk about in a different post)!

While exercising is something I love to do and really enjoy doing, it's not always the most convenient. Sometimes, I'm really tired and don't want to get up early even though I know this is the only time that I can fit it into my schedule. To combat this, I've tried to develop a better understanding of how I wake up, so I'll set multiple alarms so that when the final one rings I won't be as tired. To find the energy to work out consistently especially in the morning requires a lot of discipline and determination but the results, both physical and mental, make it worth it.

Even to write a new blog post every week requires a lot of discipline! We want to make sure we're providing consistent and quality content each week for all of you! While we all have tons of other things going on outside of blogging, MacScientist is important to us and we work hard to make sure we have something out every week. I hope you guys enjoy it!

In short, organization, dedication, and time-management all require discipline which helps you get the things you need and want to do done even if you don't want to. The greater your discipline the more you can accomplish in all aspects of your life.
