Hello Everyone! Hope you guys are having a good week. This week we're writing about burnout. To give you some background, burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It usually occurs when you feel overwhelmed, drained or just can't complete any of your "demands". Burn-out has officially been recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a condition that is not being properly managed in the International Classification of Diseases.
I have personally felt burnt-out both in school and while working as a professional woman in tech. The feeling of always having to keep going, not feeling like you have a moment to breathe, feeling confined and trapped in the pressures that you feel have been placed on you is a feeling that I know all too well. A lot of times you may not even realize that it's happening until your body physically can't take it anymore and your physical body just starts to deteriorate. When I was in college, I had a poor and unhealthy ways of managing my stress, however, now, I can recognize the initial signs of feeling burned out and have figured out ways on how to avoid the burnt out feeling.
Here are my steps to avoiding burn out:
Set Boundaries
People will run all over you if you let them regardless of whether it is intentional or not. Learning how to say no to maintain your sanity and keep your work and life balanced is essential. Some things you can do to set those boundaries are turn off your phone after a certain time, don't respond to work emails over the weekend, don't start your day until a set amount of time.
Prioritize
I talked about this in my post about defining what's important, you have to decide what will make you have to be able to distinguish what you need to do and what you don't need to do. Understanding your priorities will help you understand what you can cut out.
Give yourself a night off.
You can't be moving all day every day or you'll quickly run yourself to the ground. Find a day during the work week or school week where you won't do any work and you'll just veg out. Your mind will thank you.
Exercise.
Exercising is so good for your mental health. Releasing those endorphins releases any built up tension you may have. Talk a walk, go for a run, or do some yoga to clear your mind and get some new energy flowing.
Go on vacation.
It doesn't have to be anywhere fancy it can even be in your home but making sure you use your vacation time to really unwind and relax is really essential. Make sure you don't bring anything that will make you do work and just take in the moments of fresh air.
Being burned out can really take a huge toll on your physical well-being. Keep your mind right to keep yourself in tip top shape for anything that you want to take on.
