Hello! After a week break, we are back into the swing of things. This week we're giving our top five pieces of advice for pursuing a degree and a career in STEM. Here are my top 5 pieces of advice for anyone pursuing a degree in STEM:
Don't Be Afraid to Fail.
You're probably not going to do well on every single exam. You may have a rough semester or two. Don't give up just because things aren't going as planned. When I started my first semester of engineering. I wasn't doing well at all. However, now, I have graduated with my engineering degree, have a full time job, and I'm enjoying my life. My failures and struggles to get to where I am have made me a stronger individual and unafraid to fail because that means I am still learning.
There's life outside of STEM.
Yes your degree is hard but you need more than your degree to help you succeed. You have to be a well-rounded individual that has other interests to allow yourself to stand out. You can't need more than just a degree. Make sure you stay interesting.
You need to take care of yourself.
You need an outlet. Go out with friends. Exercise. Read a book. Take a nap. Do something that will take you away from what's stressing you out that can help you relax and recharge. It's important to maintain relationships and make sure you feel good because if you don't feel well, it will affect your other plans.
Ask for Help.
As I said in my other blog post, engineering is a team sport. You can't expect to succeed without friends, family, mentors, teachers, and your network. Talk to your classmates, join an organization, build long-lasting relationships. You need people in your corner who are cheering you on.
Study!
You came to school for a reason; to get an education. You have to work hard to get the grades you need in order to succeed. You may have to miss a couple events with your friends to study, and it's okay because your friends aren't going to be there when you take your exam. Focus on your studies and make sure you're doing the best you can academically.
Pursuing a STEM degree is hard but it's doable! Push through your failures, put your best foot forward, and everything will work out! If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to reach out! - The Engineer
