The Chemist: Diversity Matters

Hey guys! This week we decided to talk about diversity in our fields. Now this is something that I think is super important because in my field there aren't a lot of people that look like me. But I don't want you all to be discouraged if you're in a situation like that. Be proud to be the only one and show them what you got.

Now yes I know you'll get asked to do stuff to show "diversity" but honestly, it's not bad taking advantage of that. Sometimes you have to work the system within the system. People will only do things because they think you "need their help" but you can take that and run with it. Prove them wrong and be amazing.

They always say you have to work twice as hard to get half of what they have, which is why we need more people like us to give back to the next generation. It's vital that younger kids see people that look like them excelling in a vast majority of fields. It gives them hope.

That was the main reason I wanted to even start this site and blog. I wanted to show people that there are black women in STEM doing amazing things and showcase all of our talents. We have an opportunity to climb up our ladders and jump over all of our hurdles to make it easier for others to do the same. We have to be willing to help and give advice so people aren't discouraged when they go to class or an interview and realize they're the only black person there. Each one really does have to teach one.
