Hey guys! It’s your favorite Analyst here, in honor of graduation season, this week we’re tackling how to pick the right college FOR YOU. If possible, you want to try and find the right fit the first go round so you don’t waste time, credits, money and most importantly your happiness.
Naturally, we all miscalculate some decisions and have to readjust. According to a report by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, more than a third of college students transfer and nearly half of those students transfer more than once! If you are thinking about transferring these tips can definitely assist you in that process as well. Overall the biggest thing is to get in touch with your personal wants, needs and goals. Don’t feel like you owe anybody or have to follow in someone else footsteps when making your decision. Go with your gut. Below are some tips and questions to ask yourself when considering your best fit.
What do I want to do with my degree?
-Consider why you’re studying this major, do you have a personal story and want to help ppl like yourself? Maybe you just have an affinity for your subject, that’s good too!
Will I be ok working in this field/subject for the next little while, 5-10 years?
-What is the projected growth in my field
-Visualize yourself 5-10 years down the road
Is there a particular organization you dream of working with, or do you want to run your own business?
-Does my school have connections to those dream orgs, or do they set me up to propose my business plan in front of potential investors?
Look up top schools in your field
-In order to be the best, you want to try to surround yourself with the best. Make sure you can afford it too, or look in to Financial aid and grants offered at your dream school
How far am I willing to go away for school?
-Do I want to be near the family or do I want some space?
-If I choose to go away: is it an easy trip back home? Is the school near the airport? Train station?
What do I like to do with my free time? (Sports games, Greek life, extra curriculars, hiking/outdoors, jobs)
-Are these things available or abundant at my school?
What opportunities does my school provide after graduation? Is there a strong alumni group that stays connected with current students?
-This could help you land your first job or internship in your field
What are the students and faculty like at the schools on my list?
-Do I want to be a leader on a diverse campus or embrace my culture and learn to be a leader in my community?
-Do we share common interests?
-HBCU vs PWI
-Research or experience based school?
-Catholic/Christian schools
