Hey ladies! As we all know October is breast cancer awareness month and the Mac Scientist team is committed to keeping you in the know about the danger of this sickness. Breast cancer is a serious disease that will take more than an estimated 41,000 lives this year alone. This annual number has been decreasing slowly since 1989, but we must continue to fight for a cure. Of that 41,000, only 460 of the deaths will plague men (fellas get checked for breast cancer too!) But that also means ladies, we are at a high risk, we have to take the necessary precautions to prevent this killer cancer. Since breast cancer causes the highest rate of deaths among cancer in the U.S., regular exams are a huge factor in catching the disease early before it becomes malignant. Women may check themselves for breast cancer with a self-exam, if she finds any unusual changes, she should contact her gynecologist immediately. If you are unsure of how to conduct a self-examination, please refer to https://www.webmd.com/breast-cancer/guide/breast-self-exam#1
Ladies, breast cancer is a very dangerous threat among
us, especially for black women under the age of 45. Fortunately, there are some lifestyle factors that we can control to help prevent the risk of getting breast cancer. Some of them include: limiting alcohol intake, not smoking, working out regularly, eating healthier and controlling our weight just to name a few. For example, women who eat a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil and mixed nuts might have a reduced risk of breast cancer. The Mediterranean diet focuses on mostly on plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts. One interesting way to prevent breast cancer is actually…… BREAST FEEDING! Not only does it help prevent you from getting breast cancer, it also is healthier for your baby and helps nurture a stronger relationship between mother and child.
Ladies, we must take care of our bodies not only for ourselves, but for our families. Many families have lost women to the battle of breast cancer, many more lives will be lost this year. Let’s do our part to prevent breast cancer from entering into our lives and our families.
